I cannot believe Health Minister Dr. John Haggie’s comments — they show his lack of understanding of the shortage of doctors in our province.
I live in a rural community, and most around and in other communities are waiting desperately for a family doctor. What planet is he living on that he doesn’t recognize the crisis? I mean, people having to go to Emergency and wait for seven or more hours to be seen is an outrage when we are paying for our health care. Then, once in Emergency, the quality of care is slowly going downhill.
I went into Carbonear Hospital a couple of weeks ago with chest pain and was told to go wait in the waiting room for hours till they could do a second blood test in two more hours’ time. My husband went in for high blood pressure last week and was told to wait in the waiting room — both times we left the hospital without even seeing a doctor.
Surely, he can do better. We need family doctors in all areas, especially Carbonear.
