Re: your Feb. 13 article on the proposed gold mine alongside McKeen Brook, which flows into the St. Mary’s River. I read it, not only with dismay, but also with disbelief and great concern. Our salmon stocks have been in peril for many years now. The Atlantic Salmon Federation has improved salmon stocks in the river and the comments by Kris Hunter are well-founded. I spent many enjoyable hours, years ago, fishing this once-prolific salmon river which over time has seen stocks decline.

Atlantic Gold’s responses are not surprising: after all, this is a business proposal and, of course, the spin is positive. What else would one expect? I just hope that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will stand fast in enforcing its policies and not let dollar signs cloud the survival of this declining species.
