LETTER: Mother Canada a monumental folly

The conceptual drawing shown above is an artist’s rendition of the Mother Canada monument that supporters of the proposed Never Forgotten National Memorial hoped would be erected at Green Cove in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Parks Canada nixed the project in February 2016. However, supporters of the 24-metre statue that has her arms extended toward Europe in a gesture indicating that Canadians will never forget those who died while serving their country overseas, remain committed to making the project a reality. - Contributed

Compliments to Paul Schneidereit on his Feb. 20 column, “Mother Canada statue still wrongheaded idea in wrong location.” That this idea is still alive is regrettable, to say the least.

We humans are inexorably, bit by bit, destroying the natural environment and the beauty and enchantment it represents in its own right. That, in the present instance, we are talking about an internationally noted park is doubly regrettable.

Also, sadly, to be deplored is the frequent intimation made that those opposing what is, in effect, the location of a statue, not the idea of a statue itself, are failing to honour our war dead. Nothing is further from the truth. And it beggars belief that a suitable location for a statue outside the Cape Breton Highlands National Park cannot be found.
