I am writing in absolute disappointment that the pitchforks came out in force in condemnation of Brian Jones’ column on public sector workers.
The response gave me yet another insight into what gets into the craw of the privileged here. The number of views of this column was 10,965.
However the number of views on his column on a guaranteed annual income for all the week before was only 768.
This speaks volumes about both your readership and their defence of their own exalted privilege.
This in a province with enormous poverty and the highest percentage per capita public sector in all of Canada. And they do not suffer, as so many do, from drastically reduced financial circumstances as so many do in this pandemic,
Accordingly I am cancelling my subscription.
I dislike doing this as I am a long time subscriber. I am appalled that Brian Jones, a writer whom I have long admired, has been made a scapegoat for speaking his truth,
We all know that government workers are not a monolith of inert laziness but most of us are also aware of those who abuse their positions and our tax dollars.
And the financial disparity between these workers and the many struggling in the private sector who pay their salaries in taxes needed to be addressed and that, in my opinion, is what he attempted to do, albeit a little too harshly.
Or, indeed, do they protest too much?
