When I read that the Green party's No. 1 item on their agenda was to lower the voting age so that children could vote, I decided to look at the wisdom of that idea.
First of all the age of consent on P.E.I. is 18, so I guess that will have to be lowered. The Greens want candidates for their party, but right now you have to be at least 18 years of age to run for office, so their bright idea of kiddie voting will require that to be changed. Then they will be lowering the the age to by smokes, alcohol, lotto tickets. But all of those things will be difficult because they by all intents and purposes will no longer receive family allowance because the Green party feels that 16-year-olds are no different than young adults and they don't want to appear to be favouring one age over another, so there goes the allowance.
The Greens believe that 16-year-olds are so capable of making up their own minds that parents will no longer have to to lay down house rules because their kids, according to the Green way of thinking, are so darn mature and logical. I know most of those who are reading this know where I am going with this. The Greens were elected because Islanders thought that there was some common sense with this party. I would suggest that instead of promoting child-like ideas of kiddie voting for your party, that you deal with things that areaffecting all Islanders ie: health, education, job creation, etc. Give it a try
