I attended a public forum at the Summerside Legion on Oct. 7 involving a veterans' museum planned for Summerside. The issue of a veterans' museum has been a topic discussed in city council for years. What was puzzling to me is why this project has been stalled or even forgotten over the years, mainly by previous councils. This is very troubling, at best. One shocking story was shared by George Dalton, veteran and member of the Lest We Forget committee. He stated a proposal was at one time submitted to a past CAO, only to be ripped up and thrown in the garbage. This is all I know about the incident he spoke of. I can say this, people in the room were shocked. If this is true, city council members must have some insight into this. Our new city council has three members (mayor, deputy mayor and one councillor), all serving over 30 years each. None of them attended the meeting. This is also troubling. The project needs full support of all council, veterans and the public in order for the City of Summerside to have a long-awaited veterans' museum with adequate space. A place the city can be proud of, dedicated to all veterans past, present and their families.
