I have been advocating for 50 years for protection from secondhand smoke across Canada. I have been motivated by recent letters by Stella Newman (Not enough people read the signs, July 2) and Michael Holland (Questionable behaviour, July 6) concerning smoking in public places.

While they present different perspectives on the topic, they both address the same problem. Awareness!

Very few people are aware of the Smoke-Free Places Act: It is against the law to smoke/vape in a public place or workplace in P.E.I. Protection from secondhand smoke is also a human right.

Legally, P.E.I. is the first 100 per cent smoke-free province in Canada. A public place is any place that access is allowed with or without permission.

As a way of saying thanks to our front-line workers and helping prevent the second COVID-19 wave, all Islanders can be part of the solution by making where you live, work and play, smoke free.
