I couldn't believe what I was reading in the paper about online gambling (Online casinos could ‘repatriate play’ from illegal sites: Compton, Feb. 18).
The government and people like Darlene Compton don't care about the people of P.E.I., just about making money. Gambling like smoking, drinking, drugs is an addiction which ruins many families. Once you get hooked you can't stop, you keep going and try to get back what you lost.
With almost 1,000 people with gambling problems on P.E.I. we should be trying to help them, not add more. It says in the paper someone has to lose in order for P.E.I. to make money, and yes, it's more likely the lower income Islanders.
Compton says it's no different than buying a lotto ticket. Come on — give your head a shake, buying a lotto ticket is not the same as gambling one's paycheque and trying to win it back with the next, only to have your family go without food and livelihood. I do hope the premier and wiser MLAs see the damage this can do as we the citizens don't have a say.
