We’re not able to elect a minority government on P.E.I., or indeed, in Canada. But we do have the chance of destroying one. And after something like 140 years with nothing but majorities on the Island it would be a particular shame, given how popular our present government is.
Premier Dennis King is leading a legislature filled with members of three separate parties who have been able to come to agreement on all important issues. MLAs work well together at the moment, and show every sign of continuing that.
However, we know that power corrupts, and complete power corrupts completely. And majority governments tend to encourage feelings of entitlement among those in power.
In the upcoming byelection in District 10, if the Conservative candidate should be elected, that will mean the end of this majority government. If the Green or the Liberal candidate wins the seat, the King government continues with its minority position and, presumably, continues to provide the excellent government we’ve learned to enjoy.
