The West Point Lighthouse is not only a beacon to proud local residents, but an icon that helps define the character of West Prince and our Island province.
The lighthouse clearly possesses esthetic and historic value, but it is also a scenic jewel frequently displayed by government to attract tourists who contribute much to the economy of Prince Edward Island.
Although the federal government divested its responsibility for lighthouses to local dedicated and community spirited groups a number of years ago, it is now time for federal funding and action to preserve the West Point Lighthouse before it’s too late.
Transport of solid mainland rock for breakwater protection of the West Point Lighthouse, or relocating the structure is a time and seasonal sensitive matter. Time and storm tide wait for no man, or government.
For the sake of our West Point Lighthouse, our Island character for which it helps portray, and for the economic benefit it helps generate for us all, we plea for the federal government to support this national treasure before it’s lost in the sands of time.
