Re: the Feb. 19 letter by Norm Andrews on domestic oil tank replacements. I just replaced my steel oil tank. I did this out of fear of a leak and the associated cost. The tank has been installed in my basement for 20 years. It looked fine and showed no sign of a leak. I installed a new tank with a bottom outlet and a double steel bottom. In a basement, it has a suggested lifespan far longer than 10 years. Why then must we replace them so often?
Toyota trucks have rust problem with frames. They are replacing these frames at great expense, but at no cost to the customer. Dodge Ram 3500 trucks of 2006 and 2007 vintage have oil pans on the engines that are rusting out and leaking engine oil. Replacement of these is by the owner, at the owner’s cost ($1,500-plus). Is this not an environmental issue, and should Dodge's owner, Chrysler Corp., not be responsible for repair/replacement? I am getting a little long in the tooth now and wonder who ever heard of oil pans rusting out. Cheap metal, cheap pans.
