Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for all of Prince Edward Island, beginnig later today, Nov. 13, and keeping up throughout Wednesday.
As a result, Northumberland Ferries has already cancelled its evening sailings for today: 6:15 p.m. from Wood Islands, P.E.I., and 8 p.m. from Caribou, N.S., and have cancelled all sailings for Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.
The weather office says an intensifying low-pressure system will approach from the southwest today and track northeastward across the Gulf of St. Lawrence overnight. Strong, southerly winds will develop ahead of the low this evening with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h.
Winds will shift to strong westerly overnight behind the system, and will increase through the day with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h Wednesday afternoon.
Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
Along with the wind, there is some snow and rain in the forecast, as well as some cold temperatures over the next couple of days. Snow or rain is expected beginning this aftrnoon, and rain mixed with snow is hitting P.E.I. this evening, with a high of 3C.
Rain will end overnight, when the temperature will drop to a windchill of -13C.
On Wednesday, flurries will accompany the gusty winds, with a windchill of -12C in the morning and dropping to -20C in the afternoon.
