TIGNISH, P.E.I. — Tignish Council will press on with its mission of trying to bring a multi-use facility to the town.
Council expressed disappointment last month after several projects across the Egmont riding were approved federal infrastructure and provincial funding but their project got nothing.
Councillor Sam Arsenault told council Tuesday night that a steering committee wants council to keep trying.
“They’d like to see us continue pursuing it,” he reported.
An indoor pool and walking track are two of the key components council has been looking at for a multi-use facility.
He got council’s support for a motion to apply to the Community Capacity Building Fund for financial help in hiring an architectural firm to create drawings and cost estimates for a multi-use facility.
From estimates already received, Arsenault said the work would likely cost in the vicinity of $15,000.
If approved, chief administrative officer, Chancey Gaudette said the town could get upwards of 50 percent of the architectural fees covered.
Mayor Allan McInnis suggested the funding might be pivotal to council continuing to pursue the project as council, he said, had previously suggested a $10,000 ceiling for exploratory costs.
“If we don’t get the funding, I don’t know if we can afford it,” he said.
