SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The fate of Summerside’s proposed Science and Discovery Centre is now in the hands of the federal and provincial governments.
The two local groups sponsoring the project have applied for joint federal and provincial funding. Despite being delayed by elections at both levels, they are hoping for approval soon.
Once approval is granted, they will launch a local capital campaign.
The Science and Discovery Centre is a $7.5 million project. Assuming the federal and provincial money comes through, local organizers will still have about $2 million to raise through a capital campaign.
“The board of directors has nurtured this project to the point where it is ready. The homework is done. The business plan is in place. The time has come to move this project forward,” said organizers in a letter to media.
Local physician, Dr. Cyril Moyse, recently took over the chairmanship of Prince Edward Island Discovery and Research Centre Inc., the organization formed to advance the project. The board is made up of representatives of the City of Summerside and the two local proponents, the Y Service Club of Summerside and the Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association.
Moyse said he wanted to be involved because he’s had a life-long fascination with science and he would like to share that with the greater community.
“I’ve always been interested and excited by natural life. In fact, I’m very happy when I’m out in nature,” said Moyse.
“I thoroughly enjoy science.”
The Science and Discovery Centre concept is that of a dual-purpose destination with science-based attractions and activities, including a small planetarium, as well as space for local scientific research.
The City of Summerside has agreed to lease land for the development on MacKenzie Drive for a $1 fee.
