SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Summerside’s cannabis retail store will have extra staff and product on hand to compensate for the delayed opening of its O’Leary sister location.
Cannabis becomes legal in Canada as of Wednesday, Oct. 17, and the P.E.I. Cannabis Management Corporation, the Crown corporation established to operate P.E.I.’s four initial marijuana retail outlets, is gearing up for sales to start.
The online store and the Montague, Summerside and Charlottetown retail locations will all be open and selling on Wednesday, but the O’Leary store is still under construction.
No firm date has been set yet for O’Leary to open, but representatives from the corporation said they are hoping for a November launch.
With that delay in mind, staff from the O’Leary store and some extra inventory will be on hand in Summerside to make up for lack of the more westerly location, said Zach Currie, director of cannabis operations with the P.E.I. Cannabis Management Corporation.
“All of the staff that were hired to work in the O’Leary store will be stationed (in Summerside). It’s a blessing in disguise. Obviously, we would have loved to be operational on Oct. 17 in the western part of the province … but really it will allow (our staff) to be fully engaged in the live operational of the store with their colleagues in the Summerside area. So with that they’ll be ready to hit the ground running whenever O’Leary is operational.”
