CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A 51-year-old man whose truck slid into a ditch after the police pulled him over while he was driving drunk was sentenced recently to 90 days in jail.
Michael Edward McDonald appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to failing the breathalyzer and driving while disqualified.
During a previous appearance, the court heard the RCMP pulled McDonald over after someone called to report seeing an intoxicated man getting into a truck.
When the ground on the road’s shoulder gave out, McDonald’s truck slid into the ditch.
McDonald, who has a prior drunk driving conviction, later provided breathalyzer samples that were about twice the legal limit.
He was prohibited from driving at the time from a conviction in April.
Last week, defence lawyer Brendan Hubley said McDonald has since attended addiction treatment.
Along with the jail time, McDonald will be on probation for two years and must perform 100 hours of community service or pay $10 for every hour not completed.
As a condition of his probation, Orr banned McDonald from driving any motorized vehicle.
He is also prohibited from driving for two years under the Criminal Code of Canada and must pay $200 in victim surcharges.
