TRURO, N.S. — Five youngsters were reunited with their mother on Mothers’ Day.
The tiny ducklings fell through a grate into a storm drain on Robie St., and a group of people- including Truro Police Const. Wendy Cormier- took part in a rescue.
“I was the smallest one there, so I went into the drain to try to get them out,” said Cormier. ““I love wildlife, so I had no hesitation about doing that.
“It was the first duckling rescue in my career.”
Police were called about the animals Sunday morning – May 12 – after a driver stopped to get a duck off the road. When he got out of his car he heard chirping from below. He looked into the drain and saw ducklings.
A Town of Truro public works employee arrived and removed the drain cover.
“He got down in the other drain because the ducklings were going back and forth,” said Cormier. “He was trying to herd them in my direction but was able to pick up one that came out by his feet. I got a hold of the other four.”
A man who’d been walking by also stopped to help.
During the rescue, the mother duck was pacing back and forth, and traffic had to be stopped to ensure her safety.
Once all five ducklings were in a box, the duck walked to the parking lot of Frank & Ginos/Denis Office Supplies.
“We just set the box on its side and little ones came out went right over to her,” said Cormier.
“It was a joint effort and it was nice to be part of it. Good on safety. Good on the driver for stopping to get the duck to safety. If he hadn’t stopped there could have been a very different outcome.”
