SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A Summerside man arrested in a police raid on a North Market Street home in 2019 has been sentenced.
Carl Brent Gallant, 39, of Summerside has pleaded guilty to a number of criminal charges, including firearm and drug-related offences.
The list of charges against him included one count of possession of a stolen firearm, one count of possession of a firearm (a rifle) without having a license for it, one count of possessing a firearm while prohibited from doing so, one count of possession of ammunition while prohibited from doing so, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon (brass knuckles) and two counts of possession of a Schedule 1 controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine and hydromorphone).
Gallant was arrested on Aug. 20 of last year after the Prince District Joint Force Operations Unit enforced a search warrant on a home near the downtown. Police said at the time the initial search warrant was obtained in relation to a firearm offence.
Gallant was sentenced to serve almost two years and five months in jail but received credit for the equivalent of eight and a half months he has been in custody since his arrest. He must also serve 24 months of probation, must submit a DNA sample to the national criminal database, is prohibited from owning weapons for life.
Gallant must also forfeit a number of items that were seized when police searched the North Market Street home, including a .22 calibre rifle with a loaded magazine (which was not in the weapon), brass knuckles, a collapsible baton, more than 20 bladed-weapons, cell phones, score sheets, scales and other items.
