GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — A 35-year-old P.E.I. man with an extensive criminal record was sentenced to 60 days in jail for stealing liquor from a store in Montague on three separate occasions over five days.
Michael Arthur Gaudet pleaded guilty recently to three counts of theft under $5,000.
The court heard Gaudet entered the liquor store at Morell Irving on Feb. 3, 5 and 7. He was accompanied each time by other people.
Close to $2,000 in liquor was stolen in total in the three incidents, according to the agreed statement of facts.
However, Gaudet was only held responsible for a total of $186.89 in stolen liquor. Others have been charged in the incidents.
His lawyer noted Gaudet was only stealing booze for his own consumption.
Provincial court Chief Judge Nancy Orr sentenced Gaudet to 15 days each on the thefts on Feb. 3 and 5 and to 30 days for the liquor stolen on Feb. 7.
The sentences are consecutive, meaning Gaudet must serve 60 days in jail.
He was ordered to pay $190 in restitution and write a letter of apology to the store manager.
He is also barred from attending Morell Irving.
