CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —

A P.E.I. woman who said she was homeless when she stole a poppy can with $7 in it was recently given a suspended sentence.

Miranda Nicole Newson, 24, appeared before Judge Jeff Lantz in provincial court in Charlottetown where she pleaded guilty to the theft and two counts of failing to attend court.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court that on Oct. 28, 2018, Newson stole a poppy can from a Tim Hortons restaurant.

MacDonald told the court Newson said there was $7 in the stolen can.

Defence lawyer Alex Dalton told the court Newson was homeless when she committed the theft and was dealing with addiction issues.

With the suspended sentence, Lantz also placed Newson on probation for one year.
