CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. woman who stole almost $4,000 from her employer was recently given five months of house arrest and ordered to repay the money.

Patricia Ann Perry appeared before Judge Jeff Lantz in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing.

As he gave his decision, Lantz called it a serious employee theft and said time in custody was required, adding that it was a question of whether or not that would be served in jail.

Perry had no criminal record when she stole the money, which Lantz said was common to that type of offence and how a person is able to get into a position where they are able to steal.

Lantz said the court is in a situation where he could sentence someone to jail time, but that person would be released the next day on a temporary absence because of space issues due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

With the house arrest, Perry will also be on probation for 18 months and must pay almost $4,000 in restitution.
