CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man whose victim said he grabbed her by the neck during an altercation in Covehead was sentenced recently to 10 days in jail.

Jeffery Dirk Wolters, 31, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to the assault.

Crown attorney Gerald Quinn told the court that on Sept. 30, the RCMP responded to a 911 call about a dispute at a residence in Covehead.

Wolters told the police the victim was drunk and he was trying to leave when she came over and pushed him.

Quinn said the victim told police Wolters grabbed her by the neck.

Before hearing his sentence, Wolters said what he did wasn’t an act of aggression.

“This was just a huge misunderstanding,” he said.

As Wolters stood at the defence table, Orr asked about the size difference between him and the victim.

Wolters, who said he is six-foot-three, told the court he is about a foot taller than her.

Quinn said the court record wouldn’t reflect Wolters’ size.

“He’s no Pee Wee Herman in terms of dimensions,” Quinn said.

Orr said it appeared Wolters’ response on the night of the assault was excessive given the circumstances.

Along with the jail time, which Wolters will serve on weekends, he will be on probation for 18 months, during which time he must undergo anger management if directed.
