CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who was identified by jail staff after he gave a false name to the police was sentenced recently to 60 days in jail on multiple charges.

Noel Joseph Carragher, 42, appeared before Judge Jeff Lantz in provincial court in Charlottetown by video from jail where he has been held in custody since his arrest.

Carragher was sentenced after pleading guilty to several charges that included possessing stolen property, providing false information to police and two counts of theft.

Crown attorney Emily Campbell told the court that on Feb. 27, the RCMP responded to a complaint about an unknown man entering a home, mumbling something then leaving.

The court heard the police followed footprints in the snow and found Carragher with another man who told them the accused had been going through vehicles.

Campbell said Carragher gave police a false name, but staff at the jail identified him.

Carragher was on probation at the time.

In a previous incident, police responding to a report of someone going through cars found Carragher, who was intoxicated and belligerent.

Campbell said the police arrested Carragher for being intoxicated in a public place and found several stolen items on him.

The court heard that in another incident, Carragher stole a bottle of liquor from a Charlottetown liquor store.

He later failed to appear in court.

Before sentencing Carragher, Lantz said the accused had a 58-page criminal record.

“He’s no stranger to the court,” Lantz said.

The court also heard Carragher owed more than $36,000 in fines and other penalties.

In sentencing Carragher, Lantz accepted a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence.
