CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A local animal welfare organization has received funding to support cat spay and neuter efforts across the province.
The P.E.I. Humane Society (PEIHS) has received a $30,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada, which will allow the society and other Island cat welfare organizations to complete at least 120 spay/neuter surgeries for feral and stray community cats and kittens.
Collectively, more than 2,000 cats are treated annually through the efforts of the PEIHS, Cat Action, Keeping Cats Home and Spay Aid P.E.I., and still every group saw an increase in demand in 2018.
The PEIHS does cat neuters in-house. Other surgeries will be contracted to partner veterinarian clinics.
The PEIHS will be installing a full surgery suite as part of its Expanding our Paw Print capital project. The equipment purchased through this grant will further support the goal of a PEIHS surgery suite and expanded services for un-owned animals.
The PetSmart grant will also allow Cat Action and Keeping Cats Homed Inc. to further complement those organizations’ spay/neuter programs for stray cats, and also provide the potential for some cats to be re-homed.
