Paul Power relishes having been a player in Canada Games both on and off the field.

Power, 50, of Summerside played for P.E.I.’s baseball team in the 1989 Canada Summer Games in Saskatoon and a decade later co-chaired the food service committee for the Canada Summer Games on Prince Edward Island.

Power said he and fellow athletes pulled together not only as a baseball team but also as members of the entire Team P.E.I. that competed in a wide range of events.

He watched every sport he could that had Islanders competing.

“It was a real bonding experience for the guys that were a part of the team,” he said.

“When we weren’t playing, we were either eating, sleeping or cheering on one of the other Island teams.”

Power, who works as an insurance agent for P.E.I. Mutual Insurance, is once again joining a large team of volunteers to help make the 2023 Canada Winter Games a success on Prince Edward Island.

Power is in charge of logistics and essential services as a lead volunteer on the board of management.

Overseeing transportation will be a big part of his role, while medical and security will also be significant areas under his watch.

Power doesn’t appear the least bit daunted at the need for him and others to draw hundreds of volunteers to lend a hand.

“It doesn’t seem to be a problem to get people involved,” he said.

“Prince Edward Islanders seem to be very proud of what we have to offer … we are so proud of everything that we’ve got here.”
