CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The City of Charlottetown will soon be taking another step towards addressing speeding in its neighbourhoods.
During a recent meeting of council’s protective and emergency services committee, it was announced that speed sentry signs have arrived and will be distributed out to every ward.
The process of determining exactly where is still ongoing.
In July, the committee sent a resolution to the floor of council, asking that eight additional speed sentry signs be purchased, enabling the city to put one in each of its 10 wards.
These signs display the posted speed limit on the street as well as the speed of an oncoming vehicle. The speed flashes if the vehicle is travelling over the posted speed limit.
These signs can be moved around by the public works department by request.
Like other municipalities, Charlottetown also places speed humps on some of its streets to address speeding.
However, one councillor said in July that the frustrating part of those traffic calming devices is that motorists will often react to them and slow down, only to speed back up again.
The protective and emergency services committee discussed other matters at its recent meeting.
Five members of Charlottetown Police Services are now trained in the operation of its drone.
Meanwhile, the Charlottetown Fire Department is hoping to bolster its numbers with its annual recruitment campaign. Also, the department has just received a new fire truck. Firefighters were trained on it recently during an exercise at UPEI.
