CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Corey Grant’s blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit when he was taken to hospital after crashing an ATV.

When he was caught driving drunk about two weeks later, his breathalyzer readings were more than three times the limit.

Those two incidents recently landed Grant 100 days in jail and an order to perform 400 hours of community service.

Grant, 42, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he was sentenced on the two drunk driving charges from October.

Crown attorney Lisa Goulden told the court that Grant, who moved to P.E.I. from Ontario a few months earlier, had contacted an ATV group on social media in October about going for a ride with them.

Grant went for a ride with several people, including a witness who later reported he cut one of them off and went into a ditch without even trying to stop.

He was unconscious in the ditch when another rider called 911.

Goulden said Grant was taken to hospital where he gave a blood sample that showed his blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit.

About two weeks later, Grant went to Great Hobbies in Charlottetown where the staff thought he was driving impaired and called the police.

Grant later provided breathalyzer samples that were more than three times the legal limit.

Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Grant recognizes he has addiction issues and that he shouldn’t have been driving when he was.

Before sentencing Grant, Orr said his blood alcohol levels and the accident were aggravating factors.

Orr said it was “pretty much incomprehensible” that someone would ask to join a group of ATV riders and then drink and ride.

Along with the jail time and community service, Grant will be on probation for two years, during which time he is banned from driving.

Orr also issued a separate three-year driving prohibition.
