GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — A man who was tasered by police in a Montague bar was fined $1,000 after pleading guilty to causing a disturbance.

Ralph Lorne Allen, 58, of Murray River was also ordered to pay $300 towards the victim of crime fund and was placed on probation for 12 months.

Police were dispatched to the Tailgate Bar and Grill on Dec. 11 over a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance.

Allen was tasered by police after he refused to leave the premises and became aggressive towards an officer.

Allen’s lawyer told the court Thursday his client was “having a very bad day’’ and had consumed five to seven beer as well as some rum over about four hours. Allen was taking medication at the time, the lawyer added, and the mix left him “feeling very anxious’’.

Chief Provincial Court Judge Nancy Orr said the fact Allen needed to be tasered reflects the state he was in.

She said Allen’s prior record indicates he has issues with alcohol and she added mixing alcohol with prescribed medicine is never a good combination.

Allen has prior convictions for uttering a threat to commit bodily harm, resisting a peace officer, and two failed breathalyzers.

Despite that telling record, Allen’s lawyer said his client believes his actions in the bar in December were out of character.

Allen acknowledges that he has an alcohol problem and is working hard to maintain sobriety, the lawyer added.
