SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – Alex and Marilyn Campbell have been announced as the marshals of the 2018 Callbecks Home Hardware Summerside Lobster Carnival Parade.

The Campbells are known for their dedication to public service for Islanders. Born in Summerside in 1933, Alex B. Campbell opened a law office here in 1958, and went on to represent the town in the P.E.I. Legislative Assembly from 1965 to 1978. He was elected premier in July 1966 and held the position until September of 1978, making him the Island’s longest serving premier with four consecutive election wins.

Campbell served as a member of the P.E.I. Supreme Court for 16 years until his retirement in 1994. He is the recipient of many awards including Member of the Privy Council (1967), Honourary LLD (McGill 1967 and UPEI in 1978), Order of P.E.I. in 2013, and Order of Canada in 2013.

Marilyn Gilmour Campbell came to call Summerside home when her parents, Mel and Rilla Gilmour, were stationed at CFB Summerside. She took a commercial course at Summerside High School and worked in secretarial positions at R.T. Holman Ltd., and Defense Construction Ltd. The Campbells married in 1961 and raised a family of three: Blair and Graham (Summerside) and Heather (Toronto). While raising her family, Marilyn pursued weaving and machine knitting. She was an active member of the Summerside Y’s Menettes Club.

The Campbells are looking forward to greeting both new and familiar faces in the crowd as the carnival parade makes its way through the streets. The parade is set for Saturday, July 14, at 12 noon starting from the Holland College parking lot.
