MURRAY RIVER, P.E.I. — A forest fire in eastern P.E.I. has been contained and Route 17 from Point Pleasant to Murray River is open, though some hotspots remain.

Kings District RCMP left the scene around 11 p.m. Friday, while fire crews continued to monitor the fire overnight.

As of Saturday afternoon, the Murray River fire department was still on the scene, said Murray River Fire Chief Troy Ferguson.

"It's contained, we're just getting hotspots, going all over it again."

He expected crews to continue working for the rest of the day.

The fire started Friday afternoon. RCMP had closed a section of Route 17 and asked the public to stay away from the area so that the fire and first responders could attempt to contain the fire.

In a tweet, Kings District RCMP said residents may need to be evacuated, though Ferguson said in the end, evacuations weren't necessary.

"Everything was good overnight, (we) just kept an eye on it."

He expected crews to continue working for the rest of the day.

The fire started the same day officials updated the fire weather index to extreme or very high levels across P.E.I. and asked Islanders to be extra cautious
