CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who was caught driving drunk after staff at a liquor store reported him to police was sentenced recently to 17 days in jail on three charges.

Christopher Joseph Waite, 52, appeared before Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to drunk driving and two counts of failing to attend court.

The court heard staff at the West Royalty liquor store reported Waite, who later provided breathalyzer samples that were more than 2.5 times the legal limit.

Waite also missed two court appearances.

Defence lawyer Justin Milne said it was the first time Waite had any legal difficulty, he lives alone and he wasn’t able to make arrangements to get to court on the days he missed.

“He has been quite scared about this process,” Milne said.

Along with the jail time, Waite must pay a $2,000 fine and a $600 victim surcharge.

Waite is also banned from driving for one year.
