CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Clyde River man who told police he had connections to the Hells Angels after he punched a man in the throat was sentenced recently to 90 days in jail.

Steven Alton Green, 35, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to the assault and uttering threats.

Reading from an agreed statement of facts, Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court that on Oct. 3 at around 4:20 p.m. the RCMP were dispatched to a call about a disturbance in Clyde River.

MacDonald told the court the victim lived in the same trailer park as Green and went outside after hearing people having an argument.

Green was one of the people involved and the court heard he punched the victim in the throat.

The court also heard the victim remembered Green saying he was going to snap his neck.

MacDonald said when the police arrived Green was outside and immediately put his hands in the air.

A search turned up a knife in Green’s pocket, although defence lawyer Alex Dalton said it was a tool her client used for his work as an electrician.

MacDonald told the court Green’s behaviour after his arrest was erratic and he yelled at the police almost all the way to the jail.

Green made several comments about having connections to the Hells Angels and told the officers he was going to sue them, MacDonald said.

The court also heard Green made a comment one of the officers took as a threat.

At the time, Green was still serving a sentence on weekends from a conviction in July for drunk driving, damaging property and breaching his probation.

That conviction related to an incident during which Green threw a coffee table through a window and rammed a woman’s vehicle.

He has been in custody since his arrest on Oct. 3.

During the proceedings, Dalton said Green has underlying mental health and substance abuse issues.

Green denied being under the influence during the Oct. 3 incident and didn’t know the victim, Dalton said.

Before hearing his sentence, Green addressed the court and said he didn’t have any mental health issues.

Green also said his goal was to get out of the trailer park where there were ongoing issues with other residents.

Orr told Green she was sure he was well aware that if he has a dispute with someone there are other ways to resolve it.

It appeared the attack was unprovoked, Orr said.

Orr gave Green credit of 14 days for time spent in custody since his arrest leaving him 76 days still to serve for the most recent offences.

Green will also be on probation for 18 months after his release, which includes a condition he have no contact with the victim. He also must write apology letters to two people who were involved in the incident.
