CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Charlottetown man was sentenced to 40 days in jail for punching a man in the face in a dispute over rent.
A trial on common assault was set to begin Monday but James Arthur MacLean, 41, changed his plea to guilty.
Provincial Court Judge John Douglas accepted a joint sentence recommendation of 40 days with credit of 39 days for time served.
Douglas also sentenced MacLean to a total of 15 days, to be served consecutively, for failing to attend court on three occasions.
The judge imposed a two-year weapons prohibition as well.
The assault took place on Aug. 2, 2018, in an apartment on Grafton Street in Charlottetown. The victim received very minor injuries from MacLean’s punch.
MacLean has several prior convictions for assault but the most recent dates back to 2005.
