CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Charlottetown man who stole from two stores in Charlottetown and skipped a court date was sentenced recently to 45 days in jail.

Mitchell Charles Donovan, 28, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to the two thefts and failing to attend court.

During one of Donovan’s recent appearances, the court heard he had been fired from a job but was re-hired and has since been a model employee.

Donovan, who has a prior criminal record, owes thousands of dollars in fines and restitution, leading Orr to tell him it was time to be productive and start paying that back.

With the jail time, which Donovan will serve on weekends, he will be on probation for 18 months.

Donovan must also establish a payment schedule for the outstanding fines and restitution.

“They’re not going away,” Orr said.
