Agriculture Union local 90004, in partnership with the Public Service Alliance of Canada – Atlantic Region, purchased a 1,060 pounds 4-H steer at the 68th annual P.E.I. Easter Beef Sale held March 29 and donated the beef to Islanders in need.

Taking part in this event has become part the union’s annual tradition of giving back to the community.

After the steer was butchered and packaged by MacQuarrie Meats, which donated their services, the union donated the 530 pounds of meat to the Charlottetown Food Bank, Summerside Salvation Army Food Bank and South Shore Food Bank.

“This is a perfect example of how our union shows support to local farmers and at the same time helps the most vulnerable in society by providing them with local food,” said Colleen Coffey, regional executive vice-president for PSAC Atlantic.

“This year’s purchase also directly supported the 4-H club, a community-based youth organization in P.E.I. It’s also an opportunity for us to highlight the important public services our members provide in the areas of agricultural research and food inspection.’’
