“Politics is something I’ve always been interested in and I figure this could be my first real taste of democracy.”

On Wednesday, Baker and several Summerside Intermediate School students took to City Hall for their swearing in ceremony as the 2017 Junior Mayor and Council.

On Thursday, as their first official day in office, the group toured City facilities like the wind farm, waste water treatment plant, Culture Summerside and more.

“We’ve learned a lot already, like how things in the city really work.”

Parker Murray, the junior deputy mayor, agreed.

“I was really surprised by how much energy the wind farm creates and what’s really behind Summerside.”

Baker and Murray hope their work on junior council will lead to permanent changes for the community.

“There is a lot that can still be done to make Summerside a place for youth,” said Baker, “I’d like to see better crosswalks on Granville street.”

Murray added, “We can improve existing things in the City, it doesn’t have to be something big, but it could help attract youth to the City.
