SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Editor’s Note: A total of 92 occurrences were investigated by Prince District RCMP between Feb. 4 and 10. The following is a list of some of the noteworthy incidents and investigations:
No injuries in two-vehicle collision
On Feb. 4, at around 3:30 p.m., East Prince RCMP were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection or Route 2 and South Drive in St. Eleanors. A 24-year-old female driver failed to stop at the red light and t-boned an oncoming vehicle. There were no injuries. A summary offence ticket was issued under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police investigating fuel theft
On Feb. 6, at around 8 a.m., East Prince RCMP received a call of a theft of fuel from the New Annan Irving. The man, believed to be in his mid-twenties, went into the store and stated he forgot his wallet and would be right back. The man got in the vehicle and left. A suspect has been identified and the matter is still under investigation.
Man charged for impaired driving
On Feb. 6, at around 4:15 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a complaint of an impaired driver in Hampton. Police located the vehicle and issued a breath test to the driver, to which he failed. The 62-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and is scheduled to appear in court to answer to these charges.
Police conduct traffic stop
On Feb. 6, at around 12:15 a.m., West Prince RCMP conducted a traffic check on a parked vehicle at the Bi-Centennial Park in Tignish. Police noted a strong smell originating from the vehicle, and when questioned, occupants advised they had been smoking marijuana. The driver of the vehicle was issued a sobriety test and passed. A summary offence ticket was issued for having marijuana in the vehicle.
RCMP respond to two-vehicle collision
On Feb. 9, at around 3:30 p.m., East Prince RCMP responded to the scene of a two-vehicle traffic collision on Route 107 in Kelvin Grove. The collision occurred as a result of icy roads, and one driver was transported to the Prince County Hospital for treatment of a minor injury.
Traffic check
On Feb. 9, at around 4:30 p.m., West Prince RCMP received a report of a vehicle travelling on Route 2 in Bloomfield Corner, to which the caller witnessed an object thrown out the vehicle window that resembled a beer can. Police were able to locate the vehicle, conducted a traffic check, and confirmed no sign of alcohol in the vehicle, nor driver impairment.
Recaps and reminders
During this past week, Prince District RCMP received 19 traffic-related complaints. These complaints mostly pertained to vehicles alleged to be driving erratically and speeding, as well as reports of traffic hazards on the roadway. Two of these complaints were of vehicles passing a school bus with their red lights activated.
It is important to remember when the amber lights are activated on a school bus, prepare to stop, similar to a traffic light, it is going to turn red. The red flashing light on a school bus requires drivers to stop and the fine is up to $5,000 and 12 demerit point, along with a three-month suspension of your licence.
RCMP will be continuing to conduct checkpoints throughout the remainder of the month of February, in various communities across the Prince District, targeting cell phone use, seat belts, distracted driving and impaired driving.
