NORWAY

A dog from Norway, P.E.I. which had to be euthanized after sustaining gunshot wounds on June 4 was a Lab-mixed breed, about seven years old, RCMP corporal Mike Lutley reports.

Police have been investigating since the evening of the incident. On June 14, they issued a news release seeking to hear from anyone who might have information relating to the shooting.

Their report indicates the shooting occurred around 7:45 p.m. Owners heard a shot in their neighbourhood and the dog subsequently returned home seriously injured.

“We don’t believe it happened far from the house,” Lutley said.

The injured dog was rushed to the veterinary clinic in O’Leary and subsequently to the Veterinary College where it had to be utilized because of the extent of its injuries, the officer reported.

Marla Somersall, executive director of the P.E.I. Humane Society said her organization is not part of this investigation and suggested such matters involving the use of a firearm on a domestic pet is best left in the hands of police.

Somersall and Lutley agreed such incidents are rare.

The dog’s owner declined comment when reached about the incident.

Lutley said the injuries were to the rear portion of the dog’s body and its hind legs. Police believe the dog was struck with birdshot. Birdshot cartridges, he said, spray many tiny pellets.

The officer said investigators are working to narrow down the location of the shooting and are seeking information from anyone who can assist with their investigation.

Information can be called in to the West Prince RCMP detachment at (902) 853-9300. To remain anonymous callers are advised to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
