CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Charlottetown police officer Tim Keizer is seeking the Progressive Conservative nomination for District 12, Charlottetown-Victoria Park in the next provincial election.
Keizer, who was born and raised in Charlottetown, joined the Charlottetown Police Service in 1996.
“I love our community and I was raised to give back,’’ Keizer said. “That’s why I chose a career in law enforcement and have worked closely with our youth throughout my career.
Since joining the police force, Keizer has worked as a general patrol officer and with the street crime unit. He was the first law enforcement officer on P.E.I. to serve as a school resource officer embedded in an Island school.
Keizer has served in that role for several years at Colonel Gray High School, working closely with students, parents and school staff.
Deputy Police Chief Brad MacConnell said Friday that Keizer, who holds the rank of constable, is now on leave from his role with the police department and that will continue to be the case during the election campaign, which is widely expected to be sometime this spring.
That means Keizer will also be on leave in his role at Colonel Gray.
MacConnell noted that Keizer’s job will be there for him if he is unsuccessful in the nomination or the election.
Keizer said there are issues he wants to deal with if he’s successful.
“I see every day the struggles that our youth and families are dealing with — low wages, high taxes and cost of living, a lack of affordable housing options and poor access to health care, especially mental health and addiction services,’’ Keizer said. “These are issues that need to be addressed.’’
Keizer lives with his partner, Wendy, and their children, Grace, Jonah, Colby, Rachel and Kelsey.
The District 12 nomination will be held on Tuesday, March 26, at the St. Peters Church Hall on All Soul’s Lane at 6:30 p.m.
