CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - A P.E.I. man who was with several people who cut into gas tanks at two businesses was sentenced recently to a total of 67 days in jail on several charges.
Jared James Madsen, 25, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where he was sentenced on charges of mischief, failing to attend court and breaching his probation.
The court heard Madsen was with several people who went to two businesses, including a car dealership, on Feb. 23 and cut into gas tanks to steal gas.
Madsen was later arrested on a warrant after he failed to attend court.
Defence lawyer Joel Wonnacott told the court Madsen accepted full responsibility and recognized he was hanging around the wrong crowd.
Madsen spent 45 days in custody after his arrest.
Before hearing his sentence, Madsen addressed the court and apologized for his actions.
“I regret everything I have done,” he said.
In sentencing Madsen, Douglas said the damage caused for a few litres of gas was considerable.
After Douglas gave Madsen credit for time already spent in custody he was left with no more time to serve on his sentence.
Madsen will be on probation for 18 months and must pay $900 in restitution.
He must also write apology letters to both businesses.
