CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who threatened his probation officer while he was still in custody was sentenced recently to 60 days in jail.
Derrick Joseph Alder, 29, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to uttering a threat.
Crown attorney Gerald Quinn told the court Alder was an inmate at the Provincial Correctional Centre where guards were putting him into lockup because he wasn’t following instructions.
The guards had told Alder to stop calling his probation officer’s office, but he continued despite that order.
Quinn said Alder told a guard the probation officer should be worried when he gets out of jail.
When the guard asked Alder if he was making a threat, Alder responded that he was, Quinn said.
Defence lawyer Joel Wonnacott told the court Alder acknowledged the words he speaks have consequences and he had no intention of carrying out the threat.
Wonnacott said Alder had no ill will toward the probation officer.
Before sentencing Alder, Orr said he had a long criminal record that included four charges of uttering a threat.
During the proceedings, the court heard Alder had no filter.
“It’s quite obvious Mr. Alder, you need to work on a filter,” Orr said.
