CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man whose theft forced a victim to have the locking mechanism on her vehicle replaced was recently given 90 days of house arrest.
Charles David MacAulay, 41, appeared before Judge Jeff Lantz in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to five charges.
During a previous appearance, Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court about a string of offences MacAulay committed, including using a stolen debit card and a stolen credit card.
MacAulay used the cards to buy several items that included cannabis and cigarettes.
He was also caught on video stealing a purse that had $2,000 in cash in it.
MacDonald told the court the victim’s key to her vehicle was in the purse and she had to pay $966.97 to get the key fob and locking mechanism on her car changed.
During MacAulay’s most recent court appearance, the court heard he has been making progress dealing with his mental health and addiction issues.
In giving him house arrest, Lantz said sending MacAulay to jail might be a setback after the progress he has made.
MacAulay will be subject to electronic monitoring and will be on probation for 18 months after his conditional sentence ends.
He must also pay $1,139.92 in restitution.
