SUMMERSIDE — It’s a daunting task, finding the right renewable energy options out there for your house, rental, apartment and more. With professionals on the ground like Steve Howard of Renewable Lifestyles, it doesn’t have to be as intimidating as it seems.
“There can be some sticker shock associated with it. But if you look at the long-term benefits, it’s worth it,” said Howard.
Howard, a Summerside businessman, is the founder of Renewable Lifestyles a green energy technology company based in Slemon Park, P.E.I.
“It’s often that the easy steps are the inexpensive ones and they seem to be the ones that stick first,” he said.
Howard has seen first-hand the benefits of investing green energy solutions into his own home.
“Putting solar on my own house even allowed me to realize that I have this ‘x’ amount of free energy.”
What does Howard recommend as the easiest places to start making your space more green if you rent, own a home, or intend to buy one down the road.
In addition to environmental security, Howard said investing into green infrastructure allows for economic security.
“If you have the capital to invest, it’s great. It will be about 10 years of bills in advance for some people to see a 30 year pay back. But you will have security in knowing what the price of your energy bills will be likely for the rest of your life.”
It also allows for better retirement planning, he said.
“Think about it, you’re planning for retirement. It becomes a lot easier to paint a budget picture when you know what your energy bill will be, especially if you’re on pensions or a fixed income.”
Howard is hopeful the future is bright, and well, green.
“Youth are becoming activated to make these changes to a much larger scale. It’s encouraging. Take my three boys. They’re out of school today because we’re going to the climate march in Charlottetown. These guys have been activists since they were four and five years old,” Howard said with a smile.
“If everybody steps up and stops buying into the things we know to be damaging, we can start to see a change. If there is enough demonstrated will of the people, there will be more things to come.”
