Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Medical Officer says there are no immediate plans to ban Halloween trick-or-treating in the province this year.
“Our COVID-19 situation might look different in five weeks, but if our low prevalence holds, there is no plan to cancel trick-or-treating for children,” said Dr. Janet Fitzgerald during the provincial government’s weekly pandemic briefing Wednesday.
“With diligence, this can be done safely.”
Fitzgerald says her office is currently developing public health guidelines about Halloween, addressing matters such as social gatherings, trick-or-treating and how to hand out treats.
She did say anyone feeling ill or who is self-isolating for any reason should not trick or treat or hand out treats. Fitzgerald suggested that in such cases, someone else could be tasked to distribute the candy, chips, et al, or that a sign could be posted saying the home should be skipped
Fitzgerald reminded the need of people to show respect and kindness if they encounter such signs, since those involved “may be disappointed not being able to participate this year.”
According to Fitzgerald, there will be recommendations that parents and guardians go trick-or-treating with their children to ensure safety and that physical distancing is maintained.
She also suggested social gatherings be limited to bubbles of family and friends.
