CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who stole a pair of sneakers from a sporting-goods store has been given a suspended sentenced.

Aaron Matthew Wilson, 40, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown recently for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to the theft.

The court heard that on Oct. 29, 2018, Wilson went to the Source for Sports, put on a pair of sneakers and replaced them in the box with his old pair.

Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Wilson was making efforts to turn his life around and has been sober for three months.

Those efforts include volunteering at community meals at a church, MacEachern said.

With the suspended sentence, Wilson must pay $79.99 in restitution and perform 20 hours of community service.
