Y’s Men donate $30,000 to 10 P.E.I. youth organizations

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Charlottetown Y’s Men’s Club recently celebrated its 93rd year as a youth service club by doling out $30,000 in donations to 10 organizations.

The recipients were the Holland College Foundation, the Naiads Swim Club, the Bluephins Aquatic Club, the Healthy Me Program, Colonel Gray (scholarships and chem-free dance), Charlottetown Rural (scholarships and chem-free dance), Pat and the Elephant, Kid Sport P.E.I., the Inner City Life Skills Day Camp and the P.E.I. Regiment Museum.

The club also contributed to various Y’s Men international programs.

One of the most successful events of the past year was its annual food drive in aid of the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry. Thanks to the efforts of 500-plus volunteers, the amount collected was on par with the previous year’s total. The club is now getting organized for its 33rd annual food drive on Oct. 28.

At the recent awards night, Bill Irwin was the recipient of the Y’s Man of the Year Award, also known as the Jenkins Memorial Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding club member of the year. Bob Steen was the recipient of the president’s award for his work as club treasurer for the past year.

At the Maritimes Regional Convention recently in Amherst, N.S., the Y’s Men’s Club was the recipient of the Brotherhood Award, which recognizes clubs that assist delegates from around the world to travel to other countries to help promote the international association. This program helps increase the understanding of different cultures. The local club was selected from among the 12 clubs in the region.

The club’s next project will be the Old Home Week Parking Lot Project on Exhibition Drive, Aug. 8-17.

The club will be resuming its regular meetings at Outriders Cook House on Sept. 12.
