Work on a new roundabout in Caledonia is expected to begin in the next two to three weeks.

The province announced last year that the intersection of Route 24 and Route 315 in eastern P.E.I., the scene of dozens of serious collisions and fatalities over the years, would be altered this year.

The speed limit on Route 315 in the area was reduced to 70 km/h.

Traffic on Route 315 currently has the right-of-way. That section of highway leads from Montague to Wood Islands. Traffic on Route 24 has a stop sign on either side of the intersection.

A spokeswoman with the Department of Transportation says tenders for the project closed Tuesday, June 30. There was a successful bidder, but the department hasn’t awarded the contract yet because there are still some details to be worked out.

The contractor has not submitted a schedule yet, but the department expects work to begin soon.

It is expected to take up to two months to complete and cost an estimated $1.2 million.
