CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Tyne Valley woman who stole more than $1,000 worth of toys while she worked at Toys “R” Us in 2018 and then didn’t show up for court was sentenced recently to 90 days in jail.

Megan Rena Hawkins, 33, appeared before Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to the theft and failing to attend court.

Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court Hawkins pleaded guilty in 2018 to stealing $1,074.71 worth of items from Toys “R” Us while she worked there. The court heard she lost her job after the theft.

A pre-sentence report was requested, but Hawkins didn’t participate and failed to attend court for sentencing in 2018, Beck said.

Defence lawyer Justin Milne told the court Hawkins stole the toys for her son.

In sentencing Hawkins, Orr accepted a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence that Beck said he agreed to on the condition the accused paid restitution.

Hawkins paid $1,075 in restitution for the stolen items.
