The event takes place at 10 a.m.

Since 1964, Leif Erikson Day has been celebrated in the United States through an annual presidential proclamation. The province of Saskatchewan also recognizes the day.

The Vinland Society of P.E.I. is inviting all citizens to join them in its celebration of Leif Erikson Day in Vinland itself, this part of the world, which Leif  — known as The Lucky — explored with his 35 Norse shipmates more than a thousand years ago.

They established a camp at present-day L’Anse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland, and spent several years exploring lands in the area, particularly to the south around the shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This would have included P.E.I.

This Norse exploration marks the first authenticated presence of Europeans in the Americas.
