SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A man was pulled from a sinking car on the Summerside waterfront Tuesday morning.

Witnesses on the scene said the vehicle drove off Holman’s Wharf, the central of Summerside’s three main docks. The car floated at the surface for only a few moments before going underwater.

Several nearby people converged on the scene and at least two jumped in the water and helped pull the male driver out of the vehicle.

Summerside Police Sgt. Jason Blacquiere said it was fortunate those people were there to lend a hand.

“Luckily those civilians where there or it might not have turned out the way that it did,” he said.

Blacquiere added that the driver of the vehicle was a 62-year-old Summerside man. The incident is believed to have been caused by a medical emergency, but he declined to elaborate.

Summerside Police, Summerside Volunteer Firefighters, Island EMS, the RCMP and a Coast Guard rescue boat all arrived quickly on the scene.

The Coast Guard was working to secure the vehicle underwater for some time.

Yolanda Campbell is an Islander visiting home from Toronto and was watching her kids play on at the Off The Wallz Splash Park when she heard a crash and looked up to see the vehicle in the water.

“There was like a splash and the kids screamed. There was only a handful of us here at the time and we looked over and just saw the car floating. You could tell there was somebody in it,” said Campbell.

“It was only a matter a maybe 90 seconds until the car just dunked in. But then we saw three heads come up,” she said.

One of the people who was involved in the rescue and who was still on scene declined to comment.

The vehicle was removed Tuesday afternoon with the assistance of a diver and a crane.
